Potion Annie Et Michel Potion is the San Francisco based electro-guitar-pop duo of Annie Maley (vox, electronics) and Michel Bedoya (vox, guitar). Potion makes romping, bruising, sophisticated, fuck-you pop music. Their music is a true synthesis of elements, blending modern sampling and synthesizer work, surf guitars, layered vocal harmonies, and ultra cool maracas!Potion's sound is compared to the groups the B-52s, The Pretenders, and the Velvet Underground and could be described as a mix between 1980's electronic, 1960's Zombies-pop, and entre guerres Cabaret style (oh yes, they sing in French, Spanish, and German too!!). Exhibiting DIY spirit at it's best, Potion records and releases their music from their studio apartment then spreads their tunes across the globe, touring in the US, Canada, South America, Europe and beyond. www.myspace.com/potiontheband

a great review of Nuevahola by Aldo Linares @ Muzikalia.
Another review of Nuevahola by Lindsay Hutton @ Next Big Thing.
......“Nuevahola” is a series of soundscapes that spans 1997 to the present. The music on here includes contributions by Duglas and Stuart Bandit and also Norman Fanclub. There’s a definite Glasgow connection with the sound which is a spacious, filmic affair that goes from lush and sweeping to fragile and introspective via all the aspects of 60’s and 70’s pop. “Nuevahola" also includes a dust bowl, weather-beaten version of “Paint it Black” the like of which you’ll never have heard before. A nice introduction to a guy with a cool line in alternative treatments using acoustic guitars, synthesisers and pretty much anything else he can get his mitts on...

NUEVAHOLA Out Now!!
Compilation of old, new & rare songs, hand-picked from the Cineplexx's albums.
OUT May 18th 2009!
For those of you as yet unacquainted, Hola! & welcome to the world of Sebastian Litmanovich's unique musical creation 'Cineplexx'.
Born in Argentina, Sebastian currently resides in Barcelona & has been recording & performing as Cineplexx since 1997. His first album, 1999's 'Posología', was released by New York based indie label Caipirinha. Ten years on Cineplexx has recorded a further five albums, 2002's Electrocardiograma, 2003's Capacidad Maxima: 1 Persona, 2003's Pequeños Accidentes Domésticos, 2006's Restar & 2008's critically acclaimed Picnic on which he collaborates with Duglas T. Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Jad Fair and Federico Aubele, as well as a more frequent collaborator across all of his records, Sebastian's brother Martin.
This compilation picks a selection of songs from across those albums along with two brand new tracks & a pensive cover of The Rolling Stone's 'Paint It Black', to give listeners a perfectly tuned introduction to the kaleidoscopic sound of Cineplexx.
The title 'Nuevahola' is an amalgamation of 'Nueva' (new) & 'Hola' (hello) to create a new sound which is meant as just that - a new hello. Phonetically the title could also be construed as 'Nueva Ola' which translates as 'New Wave' so in essence, we are saying a new hello to a new wave of Cineplexx music to follow.
For established Cineplexx fans, there is much to enjoy on this compilation - a swirling retrospective of the Cineplexx story so far with a teasing glimpse into what lies in store. For new listeners there is much to look forward to, not least the thirteen magical tracks you're about to hear & the open door welcoming you to kick off your shoes & skip into the sunny world of Cineplexx.

Cineplexx - Picnic
After the sleepless city life of New York City prompted Sebastian Litmanovich to pursue music as a producer and songwriter, he did something slightly unexpected: he returned home to Argentina. You would figure that with all the connections, sights, and opportunities that New York City has to offer, an up-and-coming artist would be at least skeptical of leaving. Not Litmanovich though, as he valued comfort to . This wise decision allowed him to flourish as an artist, playing with the post-rock group Amarena Incident and co-founding a design studio before Cineplexx was even orchestrated. Now, after ten years and five full-length albums, he is widely accredited as being one of the most talented Argentinian musicians of the decade. For his fifth album, the masterful Picnic finds Litmanovich at his absolute finest in crafting an album that defies all atmospheric expectations. Using a variety of twinkling keys, placid guitar progressions, and synthesizers, he has created an extremely lush arena for his beautiful songs to play out in. The standout "Droga Paliativa" fuses together electronic and acoustical aspects of pop music to result in something that proves quite extraordinary. The varying use of reverb on Litmanovich's hushed vocals adds to the atmospheric brilliance, with the infectiousness of the track also being an unavoidable characteristic of the overall success found on "Droga Paliativa". For a more poised representation of Litmanovich's skills as a pop songwriter and perhaps future composer of film scores, the beautiful "Humedad" reaps benefits from twinkling keys and sweepingly somber string arrangements. The same can be said for "Novatone 500mg", an instrumental effort that sees a highly ardent melody flourish with the appropriate touches of synthesizers, samplers, and automated percussion. Whether he is using dozens and dozens of synthetically engineered samples or a single acoustic guitar, the lushly invigorating atmosphere that Litmanovich stirs up on Picnic is nothing short of breathtaking.:) !!!
And Picnic is at Top 5 best of 2008 at Batanga Magazine (US).

Cineplexx, Sonic Youth, Teenage Fanclub and others @ Indie Travel Guide !
Hello! I just got my own book of the Indie Travel Guide in which I had been part and had recommend my favorite places in Barcelona. You Can't miss this book, by now only available in deutch.
Let's say you're visiting Toronto and you've done all the tourist-y stuff, but you have some extra time. At some point, you must think to yourself, "If only I knew what Tokyo Police Club do when they're in Toronto..." (Or not.)
That's exactly the line of thinking pursued by German publishers Rockbuch in a forthcoming volume called Indie Travel Guide. True to its name, Indie Travel Guide is a guidebook with info from bands about the places they frequent in the towns where they grew up or where they currently reside.
Other info on the book is scarce at the moment, but its first edition is set to hit Germany, Switzerland, and Austria this summer, with a North American release to follow at an undetermined later date.
Here's a sampling of the musicians to be included in the book, along with the cities they'll be exploring:
… And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (Conrad Keely) - Austin, TX

Art Brut (Eddie Argos, Jasper Future) - Bournemouth and Poole, England
Ash (Tim Wheeler) - New York, NY
Centro-Matic (Scott Danbom) - Denton, TX
Charlatans (Tim Burgess, Mark Collins) - Manchester, England

Editors (Russell Leetch) - Birmingham, England
Figurines (Kristian Volden) - Copenhagen, Denmark

Teenage Fanclub (Norman Blake) - Glasgow, Scotland
Tokyo Police Club (Dave, Josh, Greg, and Graham) - Toronto, Ontario
Voxtrot (Ramesh Srivastava) - Austin, TX
Cineplexx is a strange worldwide phenomenon. Born in Argentina, lured by the sounds of British indie pop, and residing in Barcelona, Spain all have had an influence on the songs that Sebastian Litmanovich writes. With help from friends Douglas Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), and Jad Fair, Cineplexx started to put together what would become, Picnic.
Sounding like the perfect twee pop album in a foreign language, Cineplexx jangles their way along light hearted airy tunes that are an absolute joy to listen too. Like the sound of wind whistling through trees on a clear and crisp autumn day, the songs are bright and invigorating. Complete with chamber pop orchestrations, string sections that would make Belle and Sebastian jealous and a certain degree of lushness that would make AM Radio glisten once again.
Picnic is pretty much the definition of what a perfect indie pop album sounds like. Sebastian and his troupe of jangly jokers have done a fantastic job of creating sugary sweet confections in the shapes of songs that will tug at your heart as much as your brain and that's without speaking hardly a word or English. While Sarah Records, Elephant Records and the like are obviously all influences on what helped Cineplexx write Picnic, Sebastian shapes those influences into a sound that is truly his own take on what the perfect pop album should sound like.
Picnic might be in a different language, but that barrier doesn't prevent this record from being a brilliantly bright and cheery record. Whether it's pure jangly goodness, instrumental meanderings, or synth fed pop songs, Cineplexx's Picnic is a beautfiully crafted, delicate, and charming pop record that crosses barriers and cultures with ease.

Tracklist:
Final Fantasy "The Butcher"
Ra Ra Riot "Dying Is Fine"
My Morning Jacket "Smoking For Shooting"
Clovis "Un día de estos"
Cineplexx "Hojas"

Tim's Top Ten Albums of 2008
September 1st, 2008 | 3:00 pm est | Tim Sendra
Figuring it would be pretty easy to beat the rush and be the first with a list of 2008's best albums, a mid-October post seemed be pretty safe. Sadly with the impending demise of the fine site Paper Thin Walls last week and their Best of 2008 post slated for tomorrow, the list had to happen now. Seriously though, it'll be hard for any future release to bust into this Ten. It's locked up tight!
Here goes in no particular order and because of time constraints, no witty comments either.
Times New VikingTimes New Viking - Rip It Off!
Best Song - "Drop Out"
Los Campesinos! - Hold on Now, Youngster…

Cineplexx goes to Glasgow (part 2)
Just back from Glasgow were, thanks again to my friend Mr. Ally Kerr I had played a concert with a deluxe band formed by Paul Tasker (of Doghouse Roses), Stuart Kidd on bongos (of St. Deluxe & BMX Bandits) and as special guest Duglas T. Stewart singing Tiger Trap.
I also joined Ally on his set for his song I Think I am Bleeding.
My visits to Glasgow every year (as last year) are becoming a nice tradition that I always look forward to repeat. I also had a nice talk with Stephen Pastel at his records store Monorail, and he seems to like the album.
See the photos from Glasgow here:
(the nice photos were taken by Iona)
And here a youtube video of Tiger Trap live. Thanks to Gavin for the videos!
And here some more videos from Sunny Govan Radio were I did a small set at Tony's show, joined by Paul on guitars and Ally on tambourine. Here the song Hojas.
Thanks to everyone for everything and been so kind! and for the lots of whiskey that i was invited. Hic! Enjoy!
